Young coconut shells are preferred as their surface have an absorbent texture similar to paper in making beautiful handicraft The husk of the coconut is first removed and the shell surface is then smoothens by
rubbing it with sandpaper or with a special scraping instrument.
A hole in the center of the fruit is drilled to drain the juice and a knife is used scrape out the flesh. The shell is then again smoothen and shaped according to the required designs.
